KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 16.77 g, 1 h), uncertain mint in the Black Sea region, circa mid 2nd to early 1st centuries. Diademed head of Alexander the Great to right with horn of Ammon over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left, holding Nike, crowning the king's name, in her right hand and leaning with her left arm on shield decorated with aegis; in inner left field, tripod; on throne, ΣA; in exergue, AΛI. Cf. Gemini VII (2011), 313 (same obverse die, but with AN on throne on the reverse). Müller -. Apparently unpublished and unique, a very interesting issue. The reverse somewhat double struck, otherwise, good very fine.

The coin in Gemini VII was tentatively attributed to Anchialos based on the AN control on the throne, but this example, which was struck from the same obverse die but has ΣA on the throne, shows that this cannot be true. Perhaps the ethnic is to be found in the exergue, although to which city 'AΛI' may allude is at present unknown, as it cannot possibly have been Alinda in Caria, which lay way too far south for such a late Lysimachos-type
